2025 Season Winner: Evan Zhang
2025 Season Winner
Evan Zhang, Violinist
In November 2025, the NVS held our annual Ann Keller (NVS Founder and Concertmaster) Young Soloist Competition, open to students in 9-12th grades. After many years of organizing the competition, Teri Smith handed over the reins to pianist Kristin Stephenson. The judges were Music Director Tim Farrand, pianist Seulki Yoo, and cellist Jonathan Dexter.
This year’s winner is Evan Zhang, violin student of Penn State professor James Lyon. Evan played the first movement of Saint-Saens Violin Concerto No. 3, which he will perform with the NVS at our Family Concert on Sunday, February 22nd. Eric Chen (cello) placed second in the competition and honorable mention was awarded to violinist Scott Isbell and pianist Elsa Krol. Kristin Stephenson notes, “It was a true pleasure to coordinate the Ann Keller Competition and hear such wonderful performances by each of these young musicians. Having known Evan when he was younger, I'm thrilled to see him achieve this level of accomplishment in winning first prize.”
Evan is a junior at State College Area High School and has participated in many orchestral groups including the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Temple Music Prep’s Youth Chamber Orchestra, the PMEA All-State Orchestra, the Honors Performance Series and our own Nittany Valley Symphony. Don’t miss this chance to see a very talented high school musician.
